The frame is half the picture.
A framing workshop in the Old Dye Works. Choose the moulding, mount and glass online, watch the price change as you do, then bring the piece in.
Most work is ready in ten working days; gilding and restoration take longer and we will say so up front.
Priced per metre, cut to the millimetre
The moulding wall
Waxed Ash £24/m
Pale, straight-grained, finished with clear wax. Our everyday frame — most watercolours leave in this.
Black Walnut £32/m
Deep brown with an oiled finish. Flatters photography and anything with warm tones.
Ebonised Oak £36/m
Oak stained to near-black, open grain still showing. The gallery standard for prints and etchings.
Painted White £22/m
Sprayed a soft chalk white. Disappears against most walls, which is sometimes exactly the job.
Water Gilt £58/m
Genuine gold leaf over red bole, laid and burnished here. For oils, icons and anything that has earned it.
No mystery pricing
How a frame happens
01
Price it online
Measure the piece, pick a moulding, mount and glass, and watch the price total itself line by line. No surprises at the counter.
02
Bring the piece in
We check the measurements on the bench, look at it against the real chevrons, and adjust anything that deserves adjusting.
03
Collect it strung
Cut, joined, glazed, fitted, taped and strung — ready to hang the minute you get it home. Most work is ready in ten working days; gilding and restoration take longer and we will say so up front.
Off the bench lately
Recent work
A Victorian landscape, relined and regilt
An oil of the Cape wilds that arrived with a split stretcher and a flaking frame. Relined by our conservator, then a new water-gilt frame laid and burnished on the bench.
Wedding watercolours, a set of six
Six small studies framed identically in waxed ash with double ivory-and-forest mounts, spaced to hang as one piece over a mantel.
Two benches and a guillotine
The workshop
Two benches, a wall of mouldings and a guillotine older than either of us. We cut, join and fit every frame here in the workshop — nothing is sent away. Bring the piece in, or price the frame first and bring it in after.
